Will the real ghost please stand up?

M. Gautham Machaiah

Controversies continue to haunt the beleaguered Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) at Devanahalli. And this time, literally.

Rumours about a ghost haunting the airport premises which first surfaced about two months ago simply refuse to die, with new stories emerging each passing day. The stories are no doubt the result of somebody’s fertile imagination, but they have nevertheless left the airport staff petrified.

The ghost has been running riot at the airport since September after the pilot of an international airline spotted a lady sitting in a white saree and long hair in the middle of the runway. After making two abortive bids to land, the pilot succeeded the third time.

The story goes that the pilot radioed the ground staff who immediately arrived on the spot and ferried the lady to the terminal. Upon reaching the terminal they discovered to their dismay that the lady had disappeared from the vehicle. A hazy picture of the lady apparently taken by a staffer on his mobile phone had even made it to the pages of some newspapers.

Another version is that the lady was actually standing and was picked up by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel and not the ground staff.

Apparently, pilots have for long been experiencing disturbances while landing due to the ghost effect. Recently, a pilot had to actually abandon landing and return to the place of origin. That is what the rumour mongers would have us believe.

It is not just the pilots that the ghost has been targetting. It is rumoured that the lady in white is often spotted taking a stroll around the cargo area. There are others who claim that the airport cameras have recorded the movement of a headless torso. Another version is that the airport lift is often found moving on its own without anybody inside.

Now, the ghost appears to have turned its attention to taxi drivers. A taxi driver recently offered a lift to a lady in the middle of the night. However, midway when he peered into the rear view mirror, he found a ghost occupying the seat. Many of his colleagues too claim to have experienced this. They say there have been several instances when the drivers have abandoned their vehicles and taken to their heels. With such stories gaining strength by the day, drivers shudder to ply on the “haunted” stretch leading to the airport.

The airport staff live in constant fear, staying away from lonely areas, while some reports indicate that the security personnel refuse to patrol the far ends of the runway.

Stories about the ghost are aplenty, and so are the questions.

The pilot of the international airliner who encountered the lady on the runway is not yet identified, nor are there any records with the ATC to substantiate this claim.

There is no proof to indicate that an airliner had to return unable to land.
A picture of the ghost clicked by an airport staffer is a fake. Nobody is even in a position to name the staffer who clicked this picture. The names of the employees who picked the lady from the runways are also unknown.

There is no single person who has seen the ghost at the cargo area. These stories are attributed to unnamed sources.

So far, no taxi driver has come forward to confirm his experiences with the ghost. Drivers only talk about the experiences of their colleagues, not of themselves.

The footage of the ghost without a head is not available.

But the bigger question is: Who is benefitting from these rumours? Is there a sinister design behind these stories?

What raises eyebrows is the presence of the ghost in the cargo area. Is this canard being spread by unscrupulous elements who are indulging in pilferage at the cargo hold? Is this a ploy to keep the security personnel at bay? Is there a prostitution racket thriving in the name of ghosts? Is this a terror plan to ensure that the security personnel keep away from strategic locations?

Many questions, but very few answers.

It is time the security agencies thoroughly investigated the ghost stories, instead of merely dismissing them as rumours. There seems to be more to this than meets the eye.
